It's Free!  Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Events San Mateo County Residents may drop off a full range of HHW at our Collection Events.  These collections are held virtually every week, rotating around eight locations on a monthly or quarterly basis.  The locations are in South San Francisco, Pacifica, San Bruno, San Carlos, Menlo Park, San Mateo, Redwood City, and Half Moon Bay.  We also hold special events in Daly City, Portola Valley, and La Honda. We can collect household batteries, latex paint, fluorescent lamps, at these events, but if that's all you have, see the Guide  for other, more convenient options!  Also try RecycleWorks or 1-800-CleanUp for recycling and disposal options for auto batteries, oil filters and antifreeze. The HHW Program ALSO ACCEPTS* the following wastes: Oil-based paints, varnishes and stains Paint thinner Household cleaners Aerosol spray cans Furniture and metal polishes Pesticides and garden chemicals Pool chemicals Photographic chemicals Art and hobby supplies This service is free-of-charge for residential wastes and is by appointment only.  You must bring your HHW to the collection center.  There is no home pick-up.  Appointments are required to minimize your wait time in the drop-off line.  For your current appointment options and important transportation issues: Online - HHW Online Appointments Page    Or call our Automated Voicemail at (650) 363-4718  and choose option 3 *Note:  Empty containers are not hazardous waste and may be disposed of in the garbage - just leave the lids off so that your waste hauler can see that the container is empty and non-hazardous.
